5 Things to Know Before Getting a Fence Quote in Calgary

---

**BODY:**

Getting a fence quote in Calgary is straightforward — but a few things will make the process faster, more accurate, and less likely to produce surprises. Here's what to have ready before you call.

**1. Measure your perimeter (even roughly)**

You don't need a survey — a rough tape measure or a paced-out estimate is fine. Walk the boundary you want to fence and count the approximate linear footage. Note where you want gates: walk gates are typically 3–4 ft wide; drive gates are 10–16 ft wide.

A rough measurement helps the contractor give you a more accurate ballpark before they arrive, and helps you compare quotes on an apples-to-apples basis.

**2. Know where your property line is**

This catches people off guard. The fence goes on your property, not on the line itself — and getting this wrong can mean removing and rebuilding the fence at your cost if a neighbour disputes it. If you're unsure where your property line sits, you can:

- Check your Real Property Report (RPR), which most homeowners received at purchase

- Request a copy from the City of Calgary's Assessment and Tax department

- Hire an Alberta Land Surveyor to mark the line if it's genuinely unclear

A good fence contractor will ask about your RPR before starting work.

**3. Understand the permit rules for Calgary**

In Calgary, residential fences under 1.85 metres (about 6 ft) in the rear and side yards generally don't require a development permit. Fences over 1.85 m, fences in the front yard over 1.0 m, and retaining fences combined with a grade change may require one.

Your contractor should flag this during the quote process, but it's worth knowing going in. Check calgary.ca for current permit requirements if your project is borderline.

**4. Know what a good quote should include**

A properly written fence estimate will include:

- Linear footage being quoted

- Fence type, height, gauge or profile

- Gate count, widths, and hardware spec

- Post depth and footing method

- Whether removal of an existing fence is included

- A clear total price with labour and materials combined

- GST listed separately

If a quote arrives as a single number with no breakdown, ask for the detail before you sign.

**5. Ask how fast they respond — and expect an answer**

Speed matters in this business. A contractor who takes a week to return your call will likely take longer to show up and longer to finish. When you reach out, you should hear back within one business day — ideally the same day. A site visit or measure should happen within the week.

If a contractor is booked out by 3–4 weeks, that's fine — demand is high in Calgary through spring, summer, and fall. But they should be able to tell you their lead time clearly upfront.
