Vinyl vs Chain Link Fence in Calgary — Which Is Right for Your yard?

Two of the most popular fence types in Calgary are vinyl (PVC) and chain link. They serve different purposes, sit at different price points, and hold up differently through Alberta winters. Here's an honest side-by-side so you can decide which one suits your project.

**Upfront cost**

Chain link is the more affordable option by a clear margin. Installed chain link in Calgary typically runs $25–$52 per linear foot for residential heights, depending on gauge and whether you choose a vinyl-coated finish. Vinyl fence installed runs $45–$90 per linear foot for most residential styles, with premium profiles pushing higher.

For a 120-linear-foot backyard with one gate, you're roughly looking at:

- Chain link (vinyl-coated, 6 ft): $4,500–$7,000

- Vinyl (standard residential): $6,500–$12,000+

If budget is a primary consideration, chain link wins.

**Maintenance**

This is where vinyl pulls ahead. Vinyl fence requires almost no maintenance — no painting, no staining, no rust. An occasional rinse keeps it looking new. Chain link is also low-maintenance but galvanized mesh will develop surface rust over time. Vinyl-coated chain link lasts much longer, but even it can show wear at cut edges over many years.

**Appearance and privacy**

Vinyl wins for most homeowners. It looks clean and finished, comes in white, beige, and woodgrain profiles, and most styles give you full privacy. Chain link is open by design — you can add privacy slats to reduce visibility, but it will never give you the solid, private look of vinyl. That said, chain link suits many Calgary properties well, particularly for backyard enclosures, dog runs, and side yards where visibility is actually useful.

**Durability in Alberta winters**

Both handle Calgary's freeze-thaw cycles well when posts are set below the frost line (roughly 1.5–1.8 m). The difference: vinyl can become brittle in extreme cold. A hard impact at -30°C can crack a vinyl picket in a way that chain link mesh simply won't. For pure impact resistance through hard Alberta winters, chain link edges out vinyl.

**Which one is right for you?**

| You want… | Go with… |

|---|---|

| Lowest upfront cost | Chain link |

| Full privacy and clean appearance | Vinyl |

| A dog run, pool enclosure, or containment | Chain link |

| Maximum curb appeal | Vinyl |

| A commercial or industrial site | Chain link |

| Minimal long-term maintenance | Vinyl |

| Maximum impact resistance in cold | Chain link |

Many Calgary homeowners use chain link along the back and sides, and vinyl or ornamental iron across the front.
